Guidance
Mission and Philosophy
The
counseling program at Montgomery Academy is developmental in nature.
It is comprehensive in scope. It is preventative in design, student
centered, and an integral part of the total Montgomery Academy educational
experience. The program is delivered through individual and group
counseling, individual planning, responsive services and contains within
it a strong system of supports for all students. Students graduating
from Montgomery Academy leave with the skills necessary to succeed in
postsecondary education, training and the workplace. Options are explored,
diversity is valued and all students have access to a quality and comprehensive
program that honors the whole child.
College
and Transition Planning
For
students who wish to attend a two or four year college, the process
begins by taking the PSAT test. Our guidance office has several
computers and special software programs that help facilitate research
about potential colleges and universities. The guidance office arranges
several trips each year to area and community colleges and has partnered
with several institutions that cater to our students’ needs. These
trips are open to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors and consist of campus
tours and question and answer times with admissions counselors.
.
Our
“Make It Real” (M.I.R.) program encompasses independent living,
resume writing, job experiences, community service and work in our project
room. Students begin to understand the complexities of the work environment
while also having the supports of school staff. We have a growing
community businesses network that opens their doors to our students
and allows them to explore diverse opportunities. These generous business
partners help us to supplement classroom activities with real world
experiences.
Career Day
Toward
the end of each year, Montgomery Academy invites professionals from
varied career pathways to attend and discuss their jobs with our students.
It is a time during which students can gain knowledge of various careers
that may interest them as well as the opportunity to hear about job
choices they may not have thought about previously. If you have questions
about our guidance services or an interest in presenting at our school’s
career day please contact Jay Ivenz for further information.
